Akamas Peninsular 7-night Walking Holiday    more details ....

LOVE CYPRUS

Walking in Cyprus is a delight. Historic villages and breathtaking coastal views add to the serenity of the climate and wonderfully clear air.

Seemingly isolated in the eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus has been at the centre of western history for thousands of years, notably during the mediaeval crusades, when it acted as a base for the crusaders.

Cyprus is famous for its hospitality – and climate! Boasting over 320 days of sunshine a year, it has long been a popular walking holiday destination for holidaymakers. However, away from the popular coastal resorts is a lifestyle that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

Traditional local dishes include the meze – a selection of appetizers served as a main dish, halloumi cheese and the zivania schnapps.

Cyprus is well known as the island of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, who, according to legend, was born here.

However, as the island is too hot to walk comfortably in the summer months, we have chosen the best times of the year to offer our walking holiday in September through to the end of May.

You can expect comfortable walking temperatures of between 18 and 23 degrees with minimal rainfall – if any.

There are two principal walking areas in Cyprus, The Troodos mountain park and the Akamas Peninsular to the west. We found that the walks are more stunning, and the quality of accommodation more in line with modern expectations, in the Akamas Peninsular.

The peninsular is in the far west of Cyprus at its most westerly point. Named after the son of Theseus, hero of the Trojan Wars and founder of the city-kingdom of Soli.

The Akamas Peninsula is an area of outstanding natural beauty and ideal for a walking holiday - deep gorges, a wild landscape, wide sandy bays. It is also an area of great biodiversity and ecological significance. Home to 530 plant species, a third of the total for Cyprus, 126 of which are endemic to Cyprus. The variety of fauna is equally impressive - 168 birds, 12 mammals, 20 reptiles and 16 butterfly species.
An unspoilt wild place thanks to its inaccessibility. At Lara Bay, there is an important turtle breeding site - home to two endangered turtle species - green turtle and hawks-bill turtle.

The importance of the Akamas Peninsula is recognised far beyond the shores of Cyprus. The European Council has included the Akamas Peninsula within its Mediterranean protection programme.
